A Thousand Splendid Suns:  A WebQuest

Now that you’re at the end of Chapter 41 of your novel, we’re going to explore some of the references made by your author, Khaled Hosseini.  The following web quest has been designed so that you – the reader – will discover some context for your novel.

Some questions ask for information only while others ask you to apply your reading.  Since you have been asked to accomplish this quest using presentation format, it should make use of representative photos and other cool stuff.  Good luck.

Before You Begin

  • Open a document in Microsoft PowerPoint (highly-recommended) or Corel Presentations and save it as ‘webquest’.  Your responses will be completed in the form of a presentation, each question on a new slide.  Please create a cover slide for this web quest.

Question One:  Connecting English and History

  • What is the Taliban?  Why did the Taliban rise to power in Afghanistan?

Question Two:  Photographic Evidence

  • Now that you have been discovering some of Afghanistan’s history, do a photo search and find some photographic evidence of the conflict that has ravaged this country for decades.  Your photos will do the talking in this question, so choose representative and vivid photos.  Captions would be nice.  You should find at least four photos and display them with some flair.

Question Three:  Arranged Marriages

  • Obviously, the Afghani tradition of arranged marriage figures quite prominently in our novel.  Conduct some research into this practice.  What other cultures use arranged marriage?

Question Four:  Afghanistan’s History Through A Thousand Splendid Suns

  • Online, find some of the rules which the Taliban forces upon its citizens when it is in control of a country.  Compare Taliban rule to what we enjoy in our country.  Describe five Taliban rules under which you would have difficulty living (be sure to include some representative photos).

Question Five:  Special Report – Canada in Afghanistan

  • Most Canadians know that much of our military efforts over the past seven years have been expended in Afghanistan.  In approximately 250 words or so, explain Canada’s reasons for being in Afghanistan and offer a progress report on our mission there.  As always, a few photos will make the report more enjoyable for your readers/viewers.
